At Heart Sounds, we are thrilled to share the success of our most recent health outreach clinic on November 1st, 2024, which was conducted in partnership with Rugarama Hospital at Nyanja Parish, Uganda. The clinic served over 250 community members, offering various medical services and health education to improve well-being and provide vital treatments.
Key Activities & Services
During the outreach, our teams provided a range of health services alongside education on preventive care. Despite high demand, nearly 90% of attendees were seen, with a few unable to be seen due to time constraints. What we accomplished:
- Dental Care: Our team conducted 105 screenings and 72 tooth extractions, with oral health education provided to all clients.
- Eye Care: Our team treated 98 individuals, offering glasses and treatments; eight were referred for further care.
- General Health Services: New cases of hypertension and diabetes were identified, and ongoing support was provided to patients with chronic conditions.
- Maternal and Child Health Services: Our team provided antenatal care, sonography, cervical cancer screenings, and family planning services.
Areas of Excellence
The medical team worked diligently throughout the day, providing care to 250 clients. As part of the eye care services, Heart Sounds helped provide 30 pairs of glasses, which the hospital team distributed at a subsidized rate. Rugarama Hospital also supplied essential medications, including antibiotics for dental care and supplements for pregnant women. The hospital team arrived early, ensuring the outreach started on time and ran smoothly. Additionally, the new health center building offered more space than the previous one, although adding equipment like examination tables and a delivery bed would further enhance service delivery.
Challenges
The demand for glasses during the outreach was high, but due to limited supplies, we had to schedule 29 clients to receive glasses later when additional pairs become available. Other challenges included limited working space, though it was an improvement from the previous site and a shortage of medical supplies.
Looking Ahead
We’re grateful for the success of this outreach and the continued partnership with Rugarama Hospital. Moving forward, we’ll address equipment needs and remain committed to serving the community with the healthcare they deserve. Learn more about this project.
